Is DJing a wedding different from other events or even night club work?
Well, that’s a yes and no question, but the main thing to consider is that a couple’s wedding day is often thought of as the most important day in their relationship. So there are a lot more factors to pay attention to than just a simple party. Family and guests are of different generations and a wide variety of musical tastes. That said, entertaining with a diverse library of music, as well as being able to set volume levels accordingly, is imperative.
When it comes to organization, Wedding DJs have a responsibility to keep the other vendors on the same page. It’s best to have a good timeline nailed down. Remember though, that 9 times out of 10, things will get shifted around. The DJ needs to inform the photographers and caterers before any major formalities. For some examples, don’t start the cake cutting without utensils in place. The photographer needs to know what to expect before the bouquet toss. Not to mention the fact that the Bride needs to know when she will be called upon for various announcements. The DJ’s role is to coordinate these activities and keep things running smoothly.
The DJ would start by getting to know the Bride and Groom and what their tastes are. Remember that it is their day and regardless of what the guests say or do, the Bride and Groom are the ones having their only wedding day. Find out what kind of music and activities they would like. Also, ask them what they think their friends and family would like in the way of music.
Have music prepared before the event. Always have a backup copy of the first dance song. Don’t take any chances with that formality. When the Bride and Groom are being called out to the dance floor and into the spotlight, everything needs to be perfect.
Always have your thoughts together before making any announcements over the microphone. It always helps to practice the announcement before making it. If stage fright is an issue, see to it that it is overcome before DJing a wedding.
Make sure that everyone knows what to expect before engaging in the Bridal Party announcement. This could include knowing where their seats are, or if they are to form a circle around the dance floor. This is a very important step in opening the event.
Equipment should be in great shape and a Professional DJ will always have a backup system handy, in case there is equipment failure. Venues rarely provide sound equipment, so make sure the DJ system is complete.
We hope you have a great time. DJing can be very rewarding and fun.
